health insurance
Students attending our international programs are covered by a comprehensive Health Insurance policy that includes physical illness or injury, mental or chronic conditions. There are no deductible and 100% of costs are covered, up to $250,000. In addition, we provide Political & Natural Disaster Evacuation policy, which allows us to remove students from program location if conditions change. For more information, see GeoBlue Brochure.
Students attending our domestic programs (within the US) must have their own health insurance and provide proof upon enrollment. Program directors are familiar with local authorities and if in need of evacuation, local emergency services and/or law enforcement will be notified and activated.
Student safety
Our primary mission is student education. Traveling and conducting field work involves risk and students interested in participating in any field schools must weigh whether the potential risk is worth the value of education earned. While risk is inherent in everything we do, we do not take risk lightly. We engage in intensive review of each field school location prior to approval and continue to monitor conditions on the ground to ensure a safe and wholesome education experience.
LGBTQ+ Students
Everyone is welcomed to our field schools – as long as the student is a legal adult (18 or older). We work in remote areas and in foreign countries and live in very basic field conditions. Dormitories, showers and bathrooms may be shared. Privacy is almost never possible to have.
We travel as anthropologists, accepting cultural diversity, values and morals that may be different from our own. We travel to the field to observe and learn, NOT to try and change the cultures we visit with and work within. If you wish to engage in advocacy work, we are not the right place for you.
Some communities may not embrace our ideas about equality and may be less than welcoming to LGBTQ+ community members. We accept that as part of the host culture and ask students to make sure they understand what restriction on LGBTQ+ lifestyle and preferences may exist at the site where we work. To help inform LGBTQ+ students of local perspectives, check this Travel Guard page for LGBTQ Travel Safety.
Harrasment & Descrimination
We have an explicit and robust Harassment & Discrimination policies, outlined in our Health & Safety page (go to Discrimination & Harassment Policy). If students feel they cannot discuss personal safety issues with program staff, they are welcome to call the ARC emergency hotline and talk directly with a member of the ARC staff.
